Martha’s Village & Kitchen is extremely grateful for the support we receive from volunteers, community partners and friends. There are a few special volunteers, we call them our Angels, who go above and beyond the everyday duties. One of those volunteers is Susan.
When Susan heard that one of our families was moving out right around the holidays, she wanted to do more to help them. Little did she know, not only would she be helping to change lives, but this family would have a lasting impact on her as well.
Diana, her husband and their three kids had been staying at Martha’s Village & Kitchen as they worked to secure employment, save money and get back into a place of their own. When the time came, they were so excited to receive a new couch from MVK and had a few other items for their new place. As some of us know, it is hard getting started and that is when Susan stepped in and was ready to make their new house a HOME.
“I really wanted to make their house a home” said Susan. “Also, everyone donates their time or resources and I wanted to do something really meaningful and personal to help a family that truly deserves it. I had no idea the impact I would have on them or the impact they would leave on me. I am grateful to have been a part of this.”
Susan worked with the family to get ideas for what the kids each would like in their rooms and what color options and style the family was looking for in their place. The family got to help pick out some furniture pieces and Susan and Cynthia worked together to get the rest. They thought of every little detail including items for a medicine cabinet, extra light bulbs, a junk drawer with all of things we normally take for granted. Also, Susan helped buy games and activities for each one of the kids and even helped the family create an art piece together for their new home.
With the help of Susan, Diana and her family moved into a new place and had everything in place for them to feel safe, secure and be able to succeed. We could not do what we do without the generous donations of others. As a result, we are thrilled to share Susan’s story and all of her kind and generous efforts to help a complete stranger during their time of need.
